Lot 3302
Great Britain. Decimal Pattern Penny, 1961. Peck-2530. Officially struck by the British Royal Mint prior to the changeover to decimal coinage in Britain, this experimental Penny has an obverse identical to the farthing of 1954-1956. Obv: Head of Queen Elizabeth facing right, Reverse: monogrammed "EIIR 1 CENT. ONE DECIMAL PENNY. 1961". Very few of these landmark patterns (for the new small-diameter decimal penny introduced in 1969) actually exist, and this is a necessary addition to any serious British penny collection. Extremely Rare. Gorgeous mellow brick-red luster! NGC graded MS-64 Red & Brown.
Estimated Value $1,750 - 2,000.
The Cheshire Collection.

Lot 3303
Great Britain. Uniface Die Trial, C-N 20 Pence (1963). Obverse portrait with legend, fine beaded rim; blank reverse. Portrait by Arnold Machin. Brilliant luster, lots of fine hairlines. We quote commentary provided by the owner of the Cheshire Collection: "This is a curious and extremely rare coin which was struck at the Royal Mint over half a century ago, when Britain was first seriously experimenting with the concept of a decimalized currency. When Britain 'went decimal' some years later, the 20 pence appeared as a small multi-sided new coin. In the early part of the 1960s, however, the Mint were obviously contemplating the replacement of the crown of five shillings (decimal value 25 pence) with a coin of four shillings value (20p) and just a little smaller than the existing crown coin. Probably 2-3 specimens exist." NGC graded MS-61.
Estimated Value $1,400 - 1,650.

Lot 3304
Great Britain. Uniface Die Trial, C-N 20 Pence (1963). Obverse portrait without legend, fine beaded rim; blank reverse. Issue date unknown but probably about 1963 as the Machin Head would soon be used for the Decimal Coinage, proposed in 1961, announced in 1966, and issued generally in 1971. This piece is actually the size of the Five Pounds issued in 1980, with the same portrait used for the commemorative Silver Wedding 1972 25 Pence, Queen Mother 1980 25 Pence and Royal Wedding 1981 25 Pence. Here called "20 Pence" because it's approximately twice the size of the New Ten Pence coin first issued in 1968 to circulate concurrently with the old Florin. The idea was to slowly introduce the public to the new concept of decimalization. Brilliant satiny silvery surfaces and a lot nicer looking than the number-grade would suggest. Extremely rare, possibly only 2 to 3 exist. NGC graded MS-60.
Estimated Value $1,300 - 1,500.
